The value of material I have reached the point in my chess career when to progress further I must learn to sacrifice material in order to gain the initiative, time, space etc. The problem is I can never seem to do this especially when there is no certain way to regain the lost material or mate the king immediately. Can anyone recall this point in their chess when they were having trouble "letting go of material" and tell me how they overcame that… More: chess online

Caro-Kann Ok, I need your help people :) Since 1.e4 is most common opening move and I am way too lazy to study endless opening variations from books etc, I have a proposal for ppl here - if you play 1.e4, tell me how you usually handle Caro-Kann? The point of this question is to start a discussion that might be helpful to me, and perhaps to ppl who have problem against 1...c6 (no, I am propably not good enough in chess to help anyone, but I know… More: backgammon online

King & Rook vs. King and Bishop. I have never been in this situation before, but in a game I am playing at a different site the board is clear except I (white) have K on d2 and a R on d4. My opponent has K on h5 and a B on f7. It is me (white) to move. Is a win possible for me in this position, and generally, can a King and Rook always beat a King and Bishop eventually? Thanks :-) ? is you want to cheat ? Correction... ...It is my opponent to… More: online chess

Interesting article There is an interesting little article in the "Skittles Room" over at chesscafe.com ( -> www.chesscafe.com ) entitled "Kafka Lives at the American Open." In it, an IM relates how he was recently accused of cheating because he talked with his wife (also a participant) during games in the playing hall. I say this is interesting because it appears to be the sour remembrances of a bitter man as well as a hit-piece against a… More: backgammon online

Sicilian Defense - Transpositions Q. As white is there much scope for trying to force or even encourage a Sicilian Defense Player out of known Sicilian themed lines (without giving away the game)? 1.e4 c5 2. ??? I couldn't find anything at all in my database. I was just looking for something to 'not play ball' with a Sicilian player. Regards, Spurtus "anti-sicilians" Sound transpositions into known, completely mainline solid openings? I… More: correspondence chess

Calling all Scandi players! I am enticed by the opening move because Black immediately restricts White's options. However, according to the databases at Gameknot and ChessLab, Black's ultimate prospects are dismal, compared to other openings. My question: Why, given the stats, do you prefer this opening? I don't mean this to be a hostile question, because I really am considering this opening myself. * Respectfully, * i_play_slowly Hmmnnnn..... play chess online…

Chess Players in Society Today ...?! {Advance warning: this is long, some old stuff in it, subjective and potentially boring! Please do not read if you will be offended by poor, boring, aor non-concise writing or mistakes of spelling, grammar, or world view! While -I- AM easily bored... still I crave to see Forum Threads, despite the danger my writing may bore myself as well. Hopefully my intent will succeed, which is to draw forth your great play chess online…

What is it about Bobby Fischer? I enjoy talking about chess and reading forums and it is clearley obvious that RJF is most chess players idol, he is talked up with so much more praise than any other great, and I would like to know what it is about the man that people so admire. Is it that he beat the soviets at their sport in the middle of the cold war, is it the bizzare behavior and clear mental instability, is it his complete obsession with the play chess online…

A dilemma ... Okay, so as an intermediate player, I've wanted to avoid playing openings that may be super common to other players. I've found myself attracted to such openings as: Scandinavian Alapins Defense Budapest Gambit Evan's Gambit Kings Gambit ...openings that you can kind of 'control' from the very begining, hoping that my opponents wouldn't know much about these less common openings, and then I could get an advantage early. Okay, so play chess online…

Looking to Commit Some Heresy OK, I've been doing this correspondence thing for something like a year and a half now, and it's been a terrific experience, both personally and in terms of my game. But I have to confess that I still feel a little...empty. I miss the thrill of person-to-person chess, and "live chess online" is just not doing it for me. So I'm thinking of giving into an urge that's been flitting about in my brain for some time: since play chess online…

Preparing for blitz I have decided to return to competitive chess after a 1.5 year absence. Normally I prefer to play slower time controls, but I am too busy to play slow games. So, I decided to play in the 10 minute tournament they have at the local chess tournament. I am a class C player(about 1550) and I expect to be one of the lowest rated players in the tournament. I expect to have to play class A players, experts, a few masters, and a few play chess online…
