72 ( +1 | -1 ) Caro-Kann I've had some good results with the French Defence lately, but I'd like to add another opening to my repertoire. I tried the Pirc for a while, with horrible results. I was thinking of trying the Caro-Kann. Can anyone recommend a good book or two, but remember, it costs a lot for me to import those books to Bangladesh :) I was going through Amazon.com, the books I found were Play the Caro-Kann (Houska), Starting Out : The Caro-Kann (Joe Gallagher), and a couple written by Anatoly Karpov. Any reviews on any of these books would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I would like to know if there are any good websites where I could find out more about the Caro-Kann defence. Thanks.
55 ( +1 | -1 ) hiThe last CK book I read was by Soltis. I'm sure its outdated now, but I did like it at the time. I have to beleive that there will be no one in the world who would know more about the Caro Kann than Karpov ... but have not had the pleasure of ever experiencing his actual writings. Sorry I could not help much but am waiting to see what is said myself. In the meantime perhaps I should get and read a Karpov book to see how it is~!~ }8-)) I've found a lot of the lines to be rather , er quite drawish, if WT will not get adventuresome, myself. But only use it passingly and not with great knowlege of it.

The Caro is a defence i play and have had a lot of good results with it generally because white does not make enough of their early advantage, another defence for novelty value which has not been over analysed is the Scandinavian although it is not as sound as the Caro it can if used sparingly cause a few surprises! Having said that there has been a resurgence of interest in this opening.
If you want to reduce your chances of losing with the black pieces the Petrov is worth a look there are some new lines for black that make it more aggressive.

32 ( +1 | -1 ) Ah, the Caro-Kann is one of my favorite blitz openings because it throws off the opponent. My suggestion would be to go to chessgames.com, and look over some Caro-Kann games played by high rated players. I think that this is a good way to go for more experienced players looking to improve their repetoire(sic).
